German shipbuilder Meyer Werft has introduced Project Vision, a groundbreaking concept for a fully battery-electric cruise ship designed for large-scale operations. The vessel, unveiled at Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, measures approximately 275 meters in length and can accommodate up to 1,856 passengers. Powered by advanced battery systems from Corvus Energy, the ship aims to cut emissions by as much as 95 percent, signaling a major shift toward sustainable maritime travel.
Unlike experimental prototypes, Project Vision is built around proven maritime technologies, making it a practical step toward zero-emission cruising. The ship is designed for European routes, where it can recharge at high-capacity shore power stations expected to be widely available by 2030. For longer journeys, including transatlantic crossings, the design can be adapted into a hybrid configuration with auxiliary generators. This flexibility allows cruise operators to transition gradually while maintaining operational efficiency.
