Analilia Mejia has secured a victory in the special election for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, delivering Democrats a key pickup and tightening the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives. Mejia defeated Republican candidate Joe Hathaway to fill the remainder of the term vacated by Mikie Sherrill, who left the seat after winning the state’s gubernatorial race.
The result further compresses the already narrow Republican majority under House Speaker Mike Johnson. With Mejia’s swearing-in, Republicans will hold only a slim edge, leaving little room for internal dissent on party-line votes. The district’s strong Democratic registration advantage made Mejia the favorite heading into the race, and she successfully consolidated party support following a competitive primary.
